Application of XML for Interactive Online
Mapping (AxioMap)
AxioMap is a Web mapping application that
can display multiple layers of geographic data residing, as XML files, on several
servers.
With AxioMap you can:
- color maps based on values of selected variables; specify classification method and number of intervals
- build and map new variables from existing variables, residing in different datasets
- construct simple and complex queries; map query results
- display and save attributes of geographic objects
- navigate any map by zooming and panning, with user-defined zoom parameters
- open URLs associated with any geographic objects
- display, and easily turn off and on, multiple layers of point, line and area data
- edit and position map annotation, reposition map legend
- display labels of any geographic objects and, if necessary, fix the placement of labels
- draw circles of specified radii and color, anywhere on the map
- manipulate various map settings
To render maps in Internet Explorer 5 or better, AxioMap 1.2.8
currently uses VML (Vector Markup Language)
In other browsers, AxioMap 1.3 renders maps using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), an SVG 3.0 plug-in from Adobe is required
Both viewers provide similar functionality, though interface elements may differ. Most of this guide uses the VML-based version as example, while notes specific to AxioMap 1.3 are available in the SVG Viewer section
