MESSAGE from the DIRECTOR

Published October 2025

Dear SDSC Collaborators, Partners and All Friends:

As we gear up for SC25, now just a month away, this year’s conference theme HPC Ignites reminds us of the energy and innovation that drive our work and the vital role HPC plays in shaping the future of discovery. We look forward to seeing many of you in St. Louis and continuing the conversations that advance our shared progress. Stay tuned for more details about SDSC’s programming at SC25, including the activities at our booth.

As we prepare for what’s ahead at SC25, I want to take a moment to reflect on some of SDSC’s achievements this past quarter. We have been working closely with General Atomics and UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering to unite fusion research data across the country into one powerful platform. This project, led by Ilkay Altintas, is one of many ongoing SDSC efforts to advance U.S. progress toward clean, commercial fusion power.

Another exciting initiative at SDSC is Sherlock’s new partnership with MCNC, which aims to deliver secure cloud enclaves and advanced data services to more than 1,000 community anchor institutions across North Carolina, including colleges, K-12 schools, healthcare facilities, and libraries. Led by Sandeep Chandra, this is Sherlock's first major partnership outside of California.

Our work within the California research and education community continued to expand through our partnership with the CENIC AIR team — from installing AI hardware at community colleges across Southern California to enabling agricultural research for wineries in Northern California to help optimize harvests.

Additionally, ACCESS resources at SDSC continue to support researchers and educators across the country making remarkable discoveries that range from better understanding astronaut vision loss and advancing gene-editing tools to creating better batteries and modeling solar coronas. I hope you enjoy reading more about these highlights and other noteworthy SDSC updates in this month’s newsletter.

Thank you for being part of the SDSC community, and we look forward to seeing many of you next month at SC25!

Best wishes,
Frank Würthwein
