The Iron Horse Vineyards Testbed provides a concrete example of what CENIC AIR/National Research Platform/National Data Platform infrastructure can achieve. In just one year, the project developed into a 10 Gbps connected living laboratory linked to CalREN. Soil, air, weather, CO₂, and conductivity sensors are feeding continuous data; HPWREN fire-watch cameras are always online with the UC San Diego WiFIRE Lab; dashboards have taken shape; and drone and 360-degree imaging are working together toward building a digital twin of the vineyard. The project brings together the Iron Horse Vineyards staff, CENIC engineers and communications experts, faculty, researchers and students at UC San Diego and Sonoma State University, along with AT&T, and other partners. It is a teachable example of how networks can connect local industry, students, faculty, and researchers around real-life problems in precision agriculture, sustainability, rural broadband, and AI-enhanced R&E.

John Graham

Senior Development Engineer

John Graham works at the crossroads of technology and environmental science, developing cyberinfrastructure at UC San Diego's San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). He plays a leading role in projects such as the National Research Platform, which aims to expand large-scale data sharing capabilities for the research community. A charter member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, he has applied satellite data to disaster-response efforts in partnership with organizations including the U.S. Navy and NOAA. Earlier in his career, he contributed to work with NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) program, supporting its use in education and research. Throughout his career, John has maintained a consistent focus on using technology to advance environmental understanding and impact.
