WHPC@SDSC Professional Speaker Series with UC San Diego's Student Cluster Competition (SCC) 2025 Team

UC San Diego and the San Diego Supercomputing Center have partnered over the past five years to support a student team competing in the Student Cluster Competition. During this 48-hour challenge, students build and optimize high-performance systems while collaborating under pressure on real scientific workloads. Our team has ranked 1st in the U.S. for the past five consecutive years and 3rd internationally this year, with 3/6 students identifying as female. Hear directly from the students about their experiences, how they got involved in HPC, and how opportunities like SCC can support and empower women pursuing careers in the field.

Instructors

Gauri Renjith

Gauri Renjith is a 3rd year computer science/bioinformatics student at UCSD. She was the team captain for SCC this past season, coordinating vendor relations, sponsorship outreach, and leading the team to a strong finish at SCC25. Gauri is passionate about applying HPC to scientific research, particularly for machine learning and the biological sciences.

Cecilia Li

Cecilia Li is a 2nd year electrical engineering student at UCSD. She worked on paper reproducibility during SCC25, and was heavily involved in sponsorship outreach as the Supercomputing Club's outreach coordinator. Her interests lie in digital ICs, ASICs, and High-Performance Computing.

Shing Hung

Shing Hung is a 4th year electrical engineering student at UCSD with diverse experience across embedded systems, hardware design, and HPC. She was the vice captain for SCC this past season, managing logistics alongside competition preparations.
