life-cycle development experience on commercial and internal products from
requirements analysis through product release
- Experience with C/C++,
Java, J2SE, Swing, Applets, JDBC, J2EE, RMI, EJB, SQL, ODBC, Oracle, XML,
JSP, XSL
- Experience with
object-oriented design methodologies and UML.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Pacific Technology Services February 2001 to
October 2001
Carlsbad, CA
Sr. Software Engineer
- Developed data access
layer (DAL) an API, abstracting JDBC to provide database access
independent of database vendor (ie. Oracle and SQL Server). Developed DAL
based abstraction layer for generalized queries, and transactions.
- Provided JDBC
ResultSets and XML based output from queries. Designed and implemented code for DTD and Schema based XML
results.
- Gathered requirements
from internal end-users. Expressed high level designs in UML using
Rational Rose with emphasis on object models and sequence diagrams.
- Responsible for data
model design and implementation including database metadata. Used Oracle 8i for database
implementation.
- Implementation was
handled using J2SE, JDBC, EJB, Oracle 8i. XML and result sets used as data
interchange between user-interface and business services layer.
·
Designed and evolved the XML schema used in the system.
Used the Apache Xerces DOM API in the business and DAL layers.
- Implemented connection
pool manager, a multi-threaded service utilizing thread management and
synchronization.
- Implemented an
instrumentation applet for monitoring database and connection activity,
and usage.
- Developed JSP’s, Java
Beans as part of a client-based web service utilizing the above DAL
framework.
- Developed an automated
build system for application using dos scripting (java tools such as jar,
javac). Followed procedures for
source code control, multi-version development, and build/release
processes.
- Developed base
architectural services such as logging, and exception handling framework.
- Provided test cases and
collaborated with QA on the development of Test Plans.
Pharmingen - BD Biosciences November 2000 to Feb 2001
La Jolla, CA
Sr. Software Engineer (short term
contract)
- Developed software to
parse and extract content from diverse html catalogs and sources to
populate corporate database (Oracle 8i) via JDBC.
- Improved performance of
swing based data catalog-viewer application in various ways (redesigned
dynamic query builder, reduced load time, etc).
- Provided mentoring to
team members with regards to Java technologies.
Aurora Biosciences April 2000 to November 2000
La Jolla, CA
SR. Software Engineer (contract)
- Responsible for
client-side (applet) technical architecture and implementation
(View/Controller/Model) for web based screening system (UHTSS).
·
Designed, and implemented a set of java classes for the
capture, storage and analysis of data from the Aurora Ultra High Throughput
Screening System (UHTSS, see http://www.aurorabio.com/discovery). Data were
requested from an Oracle database. Results of calculations were written to an
Oracle data mart. Java classes corresponded closely to real-world entities
being modeled.
·
Developed Java GUI and classes to create charts and
several 2-dimensional views of micro-plate data.
- Gathered requirements
from internal end-users and scientists and performed use case analysis.
Expressed high level designs in UML using Rational Rose with emphasis on
object models and sequence diagrams.
- Responsible for data
model design and implementation.
Implemented dynamic computational workflow using Apache Xerces and
Sun JAXP DOM/SAX API’s.
- Significantly improved
performance and resource use of numerically intensive computation
engine. Reduced computation time
to 2 seconds vs. 2 minutes utilizing java based performance guidelines and
tips.
- Implementation was
handled using java Swing, J2SE, Oracle 8i, and PL/SQL. XML and HTTP used
as data interchange between user-interface and business services
layer.
- Developed an automated
build system for application using dos scripting (discovered a major flaw
with Jbuilder4 regarding jar file imports). Developed procedures for source code control, multi-version
development, and build/release processes.
- Developed base
architectural service ie. exception handling framework.
- Implemented 1-D signal
processing algorithms (background subtraction, peak detection).
- Developed java code in
both Unix (Linux) and Windows NT environments.
San Diego Supercomputer Center June 1996 to July 2000
La Jolla, CA
Scientific Programmer/Analyst
- Team lead for web based
data visualization/management system.
- Implemented using Java
(applet)/HTML for user interface (Java 1.2 and Java Foundation Classes
(Swing) on Solaris) which accessed XML based data.
- Designed and developed
the XML and DTD's implemented within the database. See link.
- Developed java code in
both Unix (Solaris) and Windows NT environments.
- Gathered requirements
from application scientists. Developed functional and technical
specifications.
- Ported a VRML/OpenGL
application (Molscript) from
Unix to WIN32 using Visual C++/MFC.
- Extensive Perl/cgi
programming experience for back end systems to front end forms based web
gui's for Protein Databank. This included creating a web based, GUI and
the server side application to generate VRML from PDB files. See, PDB link and example
1ATP
- San Diego Bay project –
Web based modeling the habitat of the San Diego bay. Implemented using java, VRML and
perl-cgi. This included design of front end GUI and implementation of
Java/VRML to develop biological based simulations. Substantial perl
scripting to render VRML models from raw biological and bathymetry data.
