new preview image of mobius strip
new preview image of mobius strip (in stereo)
Here is the latest version of the mobius image. It took a while to get some issues such as coming up with a good composition without having anything really important in the middle (due to the seam) and not having anything in the foreground bleeding off the left and right edges (a no-no in pscholograms), but I think it's coming along really well. Stephen at Art^n seems to think it will translate really well into a pshchologram, which is good.
At this point, I'm leaning towards leaving the strip looking as it does now as far as the texture is concerned. I like the look we have now for it and I've gotten really good responses from everyone about how it looks currently. I like the simple look to it - not to cluttered, but interesting.
The streamlines look REALLY good in stereo. Try the stereo version above and free view it if you know how. It looks amazing in real stereo, using the Crystal Eyes glasses. To try this:
- Get a pair of stereo glasses from the cabinet
- Log into any vislab SGI with stereo ability (simba, nala, beast)
- cd to /projects/vis/mobius/pix/test2
- type 'test2_stereo' at the prompt
Wait a moment and the screen should change and display the image in stereo. Way cool!
The current plan is to add a few more sciencey elements (DNA/RNA perhaps, other molecules, maybe make the map more distinct) and likely call it done there.
Comments are welcome.
These are some test outputs from Art^n based on renders I gave them. Overall, it's coming
along really well. We'll most likely have to change the current composition due to the seam in the middle (see the Mismatch example below).
The stereo works great with the strip. Try to free view the stereo example. You do this the same way as you view those silly speckle 3D art thingies everyone's been doing. Basically, cross your eyes until the two images merge, then hold your eyes there until you can focus on the merged image. Works great - lots of depth.
- Mismatch example:
A sample of a worst case mismatch at the seam between the two panels. This is why they don't recommend
having important stuff cross the seam. I'll work on a new composition . . .
- Stereo example
Free view it if you can . . .
- Preview example:
The current composition which is likely going away.
- Quicktime movie example:
A movie of all the frames rendered. Run this with 'play every frame' options and swing loop type or similar options on your favorite movie program. I believe this is supposed to simulate what it would
look like if you moved from side to side while viewing the image. Not sure though . . . I'll clarify that.
