This page includes links to tutorials covering scientific visualization techniques, as well as commonly used visualization software including AVS 5, AVS / Express, and IBM Data Explorer. Wherever available, material covering both introductory and advanced concepts is provided. While not intended to replace course instruction, these links should provide reasonable coverage of the respective subjects.

Scientific Visualization Concepts

  • Introduction to Scientific Visualization   by Dr. Nicole Bordes
This tutorial provides a thorough introduction to scientific visualization concepts, tools, common techniques, visualization "sins", and new developments in this area.

  •
  • Introduction to Scientific Visualization   by Greg Johnson
A short course focusing on the scientific visualization process. This material covers each step of the process in detail, as well as how the process works in common software packages such as AVS and Data Explorer. Finally, concepts of collaborative scientific visualization are discussed.

AVS (Application Visualization System)

  • Introduction to AVS 5   by Dr. Nicole Bordes
A complete introduction to the popular AVS 5 visualization system. This tutorial provides an overview of the package, as well as detailed descriptions of the major tools, the AVS data model, how to import data, visualization techniques included, and tips and tricks.

  •
  • Scientific Visualization with AVS   by Ken Flurchick et al.
Fully illustrated, this material covers the major AVS components and data types, and includes a good collection of AVS "networks" which show how to use many of the major visualization methods available in AVS.

  •
  • Writing AVS 5 Modules   by Ken Flurchick
Advanced material which describes how to extend the capabilities of AVS by writing additional software modules. Details of the AVS programming interface, data types, and module structure are covered. Sample code is included.

AVS / Express

  • Introduction to AVS / Express Visualization Edition   by the International AVS Center
AVS / Express is a new tool from Advanced Visual Systems (authors of AVS 5). This tutorial provides an introduction to the AVS / Express visualization system. It covers all major components, the AVS / Express data model, how to import data, and how to handle 2D and 3D data.

  •
  • Moving from AVS 5 to AVS / Express   by the IAVSC
Designed for existing users of AVS 5, this material details the differences between AVS 5 and AVS / Express. The AVS / Express data model, architecture, V scripting interface, data viewers and modules, AVS 5 compatibility kit, and migration from AVS 5 are covered.

  •
  • Module Writing for AVS / Express   by the IAVSC
Advanced material for programmers which describes how to develop new software modules and macros for use with AVS / Express. This tutorial covers the AVS / Express programming interface, properties, and attributes.

IBM Data Explorer

  • Data Explorer Tutorial   (available through Data Explorer only)
An introduction to the Data Explorer (DX) scientific visualization system. Built into DX itself, this tutorial describes how to use the major graphical interface components to construct a "visual program" (visualization). To access this material, start Data Explorer using the command dx and select Run Tutorial from the resulting menu.
