Welcome to BIMM 140
This web page is the official source of information about
BiMM140 and you should frequently check here for updates and corrections.
Also check the BIMM 140 Syllabus
for changes in the lecture schedule.
- 26 March 2003 - Course Web Pages for Spring, 2003,
are being prepared.
- 31 March 2003 - Nearly all of the Course Web Pages
have been finished. The lecture PDF file for the first two lectures
is available under Lectures.
- 2 April 2003: A request has been made to make the
PDF lecture files smaller by preparing one such for each lecture.
We will do this.
- 2 April 2003: Printing Problems? One student
experienced problems printing out an entire Lecture PDF file,
namely, the printer slowed down and finally "timed out".
This is probably due to limited memory capacity of the printer,
particularly true for old printers. Some of the Lecture Slides
have high image content and hence require considerable memory.
If you have this problem, try printing out fewer Lecture Slides
at a time, particularly for high image content slides such as
Slides 24-27 (Slides 12-15 in single lecture PDF file) for the
Resources I lecture of Wed 2 April.
- 3 April, 2003: Aaron Parker, TA, Office Hours: Tues, 2-3
pm, York 3010D
This information has also been posted on the Header at the
top of each of these Web Pages.
- 3 April, 2003: Printing Problems 2: We have noticed
a problem with use of Acrobat Reader on PC computers in both
displaying and printing out the Lecture PDF files directly from
Internet Explorer. This is probably the same problem as that
noted above. Clearly the above "solution" will not
work if the slides can not be displayed.
- A solution to this appears to be the following for
PC computers:
- Go to the Lectures Web
page and place the mouse over the Lecture PDF file you desire.
BUT do NOT click on the Web link.
- Rather: RIGHT click using the PC 2-button mouse
and select "Save Target as ..." from the
PopUp Menu that appears. The Lecture PDF File will automatically
be saved as a PDF file.
- Save the File some place on your PC computer, open the File
with Acrobat Reader, and proceed to examine or print out the
Lecture Slides.
- If you are using a Mac computer, just save the PDF
File to disk, open it with Acrobat Reader, and proceed to examine
or print out the Lecture Slides.
- In case these solutions do NOT work, the lectures
for Mon 31 Mar (31Mar) and Wed 2 Apr (1Apr) are available as
separate PDF files, and the lecture for Fri 4 Apr is available
as three files (4ApA, 4ApB, 4ApC). These files should be small
enough that you can display and print them directly on PC Computers.
- Please send email to dsmith@ucsd.edu if you continue to
have problems printing out the lecture notes.
- 4 April, 2003: The suggestion has been made to make
the Lecture Slide page Numbers be continuous between lectures
rather than start with page 1 with each pdf file, to facilitate
identification of which printed slide belongs to which pdf file
and lecture.
This is difficult to do, since the Slide Number is part of the
Master PPT slide.
However, the Lecture Slides now have the Lecture Number at the
top of each slide, and the Lecture Number is now present on the
Syllabus Web Page.
You may of course also add your own pagination code to each page
that you print out, for identification purposes.
- 8 April,2003: Lecture Notes are updated through Wednesday,
9 April, 2003
- Quiz 1: Fri 11 April, 2003, in Discussion Section;
20 min, beginning at 10:05 am; short answer;
covers from Lec 1 up through lecture of Wed 9 April.
- 14 April, 2003: Quiz1 is graded and will be available
in Lecture today
Key,
Distribution, and Statistics are posted here
under Exams
... the mean was 66.2 / 100 !!
Note: The Key and Graph are gif images ... you can bring
these up in your browser as an image, and then print out the
image ...
- 9 May, 2003: Lecture Notes are updated through Friday,
9 May, 2003
The pdf file "may9.2003" contains material from the
lecture of Wednesday, 7 May, 2003
- 15 May 2003: Final exam will be Thursday June 12 in WLH 2207
from 11:30 to 2:30 pm.
- 1 June 2003: Statistics and Score Distributions are now available
for all Quizes, and the Key for Quiz 4 is also available; look in the Exams
Web page. Lecture notes are now available from the Lectures Web page on
the 3D Modeling / Homology / Threading / Energy Minimization / Molecular
Dynamics lectures.
- 10 June 2003: Lecture Notes are now available as pdf files for
all Lectures. The lectures of 21-23 May of Protein Structure, and of 6 June,
on LD and Hapolotype Mapping, have been split into parts to yield small
enough pdf files to download from PC computers (hopefully!).
