Word from User Support

We are pleased to announce a major building expansion for SDSC. The groundbreaking ceremony was held June 8, 2006 and was led by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and SDSC Director Fran Berman. With the existing building and new extension, SDSC will have 160,000 total square feet of space and nearly five megawatts of power - enough wattage to light five thousand homes - to operate the Center and its high-performance computing and data systems. This issue features a section on the groundbreaking ceremony.

Analysis tools play a very important role in utilizing the computation resources to the fullest. SDSC's Nicholas Wright and NERSC's David Skinner have worked together to create one such tool, Integrated Performance Monitoring (IPM), that helps provide a summary of computation and communication in parallel programs. Read more about this tool in our featured section.

"Da SDSC Code" in our trivia section - our take on the Da Vinci Code, will be interesting and intriguing to many.

Always use MP_INFOLEVEL environment variable or the -infolevel option when you invoke POE to help trouble shooting abnormal job termination problems, for example:
cp: cannot stat `/dsgpfs/username/dir1/program': A file or directory in the path name does not exist.
ERROR: 0031-250 task 160: Terminated
Setting either of these to 6 gives you the maximum number of diagnostic messages when you run your program. - Eva Hocks.
