Overview: Computing Allocations on the TeraGrid

University of California Academic Associates Program (UCAAP): Researchers at University of California campuses, including graduate students, can apply for free access to SDSC resources through the UCAAP without going through the national allocations process.

Computing allocations are awarded based on the purpose for the allocation, as well as the size of the request. Allocation requests are subject to a committee review process. Allocations are typically for one year, although experienced users may apply for a multi-year award. Time can be requested on more than one machine as long as the total time does not exceed the allocation's limits.

  • Startup Allocations: These awards target new users and researchers who wish to develop code, test applications or explore the TeraGrid. Startup allocations will not exceed 200,000 SUs (CPU-hours), although limits on individual machines may vary. The limit on the SDSC IA-64 Linux cluster is 50,000 SUs. Submissions are accepted at any time and responded to within a few days. Only an abstract of your project and the PI's CV are required.
  • Education Allocations: These allocations are specific for training and classroom use. Limits and request requirements are the same as for Startup Allocations.
  • Research Allocations: Large awards (no SU request limit) are intended for production use. Requests are accepted and reviewed quarterly. See Submission windows and allocation start dates and request requirments in the TeraGrid Web site.

A complete description of the NFS allocations process is available at the Teragrid web site.

SDSC also offers data allocations for long-term storage, data collection hosting, and database hosting. See SDSC Data Central.
