DATA BACKUP & ARCHIVE

Backup Storage

Numerous types of remote storage are offered at SDSC. All backup storage utilizes SDSC's 27PB capacity tape silos for long term archival storage.

Commvault Backup Suite

SDSC IT uses and recommends the Commvault Simpana backup suite. This software tool allows easy configuration of backup policies, along with quick retrieval, all through a platform independent GUI. Many groups at UCSD utilize this method and have found success.

Client backup agents are available for numerous operating systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OSX) and many popular enterprise applications (Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Sharepoint, Oracle, DB2). As Commvault continues to release new backup agents, please contact SDSC for the latest list.

One time costs for per-client licenses are at-cost (approx. $500), setup costs including configuration of policies, $1000. On-going pricing of $2000 per year for access to system and support, plus $390/TB per year for data storage. Annual client license renewal is at-cost (approx. $90/year).

Other Backup Methods

Some departments already have backup software/procedures in place and simply need a remote filesystem to store data. SDSC can provide file level access to our archives via CIF/SMB or over scp/sftp with a UNIX shell. Priced at $390/TB per year of data stored plus a small data access fee.

Locally Attached SAN Disk

For systems colocated within SDSC's machine room, high speed fibre channel SAN disk is available. For more information please contact services@sdsc.edu.
