Networking & Grids

Playing a vital role in advancing the nation's critical network infrastructure and the grid software that makes networked resources most useful, SDSC's research groups investigate, develop and operate high-performance networks and grids. Grid computing refers to a set of technologies that allow the creation of virtual organizations with compute, data or other resources distributed geographically across the member organizations, and the capability to harness these resources as needed by scientists in real time for a particular application.

SDSC's Grid Development Group's mission is to develop grid middleware tools and technology to meet the needs of various projects. The center's grid and network technologies support national efforts such as the TeraGrid, the Biomedical Information Research Network (BIRN), the Geosciences Grid (GEON) and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Systems Grid (NEESit).
