Part of the
highest Reynolds number, highest resolution ocean simulation calculated
by Jeffrey B. Weiss at the University of Colorado and colleagues
(see story) on NPACI resources including
Blue Horizon. Vortex structures covering a wide range of scales
populate the region south of the main jet, which flows across
the basin from left to right. Small eddies and vortices, some
as small as 10 km in diameter, are evident in the flow on the
southern, northern, and western boundaries of the basin. Some
of these endure for more than a year in the simulations. Animations
reveal direct vortex-vortex mergers that limit the growth of the
overall vortex population.
