Derived Resources - General

The Molecular Information Agent (MIA) provides a means to find Internet references to a particular structure or sequence starting with a sequence identifier from a particular database, a structure identifier from the PDB, the sequence itself or a set of keywords. The procedure is as follows:

  1. The information provided is simultaneously sent to over 60 Internet resources.
  2. Each of those resources is queried.
  3. The query may be iterative. For example, if the query detects another sequence that may be queried also.
  4. Query results are returned to the submitter as a composite Web page
  5. This process usually takes on the order or a few minutes and teh results are stored for your future access for a period of months

The PDB does this for you for all structures. Information on all structures is updated approximately every 3 months and the data are stored in a database for your immediate access.

Try it by selecting any structure and going to the other sources option:

Example: returning to our protein kinase 2CPK select the "Other Sources" option.

You will see a list of related Web sites containing information on sequence and structure. Those related to structure are Internet resources that contain information derived from the primary PDB entry either by manual inspection or by automated procedures. We will explore a couple of these resources that relate to structure classification and structure comparison.

The list can be expanded by selecting "All" to get all references to related structures.
