    Description: A highly motivated scientist is required to join Andrew McCarthy's Synchrotron Crystallography team in the EMBL Grenoble Outstation. This team works in close collaboration with the ESRF on advanced data collection methods and instrumentation with the aim of impacting on challenging structural biological problems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the routine operations, maintenance and user support of the recently built and highly successful microfocus beamline ID23-2 at the ESRF. Other activities, to be carried out together with the EMBL Diffraction Instrumentation team, will include development and commissioning of instruments and scientific software associated with the sample environment on synchrotron MX beamlines, in particular the development of methodologies for collecting X-ray data from microcrystals. The successful candidate should have a PhD degree and at least two years post-doctoral experience in protein crystallography. An interest in and knowledge of instrumentation and software for macromolecular crystallography beamlines at a synchrotron is highly desirable, and scientific computing skills are required. Successful candidate will work closely with external visitors and should have an excellent command of English. Basic knowledge of French would be advantageous

    Description: The Department of Chemistry is rapidly expanding the analytical capabilities in the Integrated Molecular Structure Education and Research Center (IMSERC) that will culminate in the opening of a new 10,000 sq. ft. facility in 2011 and the addition of three new Senior Scientist positions. The facility houses the department’s NMR, mass spectrometry, single crystal X-ray and trace metals analysis capabilities. The IMSERC is an open access analytical research center where users have 24x7 access to capital intensive characterization techniques and expert scientists are available to train users on proper selection of techniques and perform advanced characterization of synthetic materials. The IMSERC currently houses a Smart 1000 and APEX2 X-ray diffractometer. The IMSERC is seeking candidates with a record of teaching, laboratory management and performing structure determination for organic and inorganic compounds. Individual must be familiar with modern software, such as SHELX and JANA, and must have a demonstrated history of solving structures with incorporated solvent, merohedrally twinned crystals and working with air sensitive samples. Competence with refining modulated structures is highly desired. Duties include sample analysis, consultation on crystallization techniques, and assistance with data interpretation, user training and manuscript preparation. In addition, the successful application will assist the Director with the identification of needed additional equipment and the preparation of grant proposals to obtain such equipment. Our recently established state of the art structural biology lab features well equipped wet lab space for large scale protein expression, purification and supporting biochemical ex-periments, facilities for automated protein crystallization, inhouse X-ray diffraction experiments, access to synchrotron facilities as well as a dedicated linux computer cluster for crystallographic calculations, model building, refinement and structure analysis. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with genuine interest in structural biology and Alzheimer’s disease.
