Software Development and Systems Maintenance - Protein Structure & Modelling
A Research Specialist position is available at Howard Hughes Medical
Institute at the University of Washington for computer systems management and
software support. Systems management will include co-responsibility for the
configuration and maintenance of X-ray crystallographic and molecular
modelling software on a large collection of networked UNIX graphics
workstations, and maintenance of molecular databases. Experience with VMS
would be advantageous. The successful candidate should be capable of
interacting well with experienced computer users, introduce new users to
software and hardware, develop new computer programs, and be able to interact
with scientists of different disciplines , such as structural biology,
molecular modeling, protein engineering and medicinal chemistry.

Protein Engineering and Molecular Biology
A Research Technician position is available at the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute at the University of Washington for exploring the functioning and
engineering of medically relevant proteins. Experience with site-directed
mutagenesis and overexpression is required. Know-how of protein purification
procedures is most welcome. There will be marvelous opportunities to work on
problems of great medical relevance, in particular infectious diseases, and to
interact with scientists of different disciplines, such as structural biology,
molecular modeling, protein engineering and medicinal chemistry.

Description: We are seeking a scientific programmer to assist in the development
of a number of software tools aimed at discovering new information of
relevance to biologists by comparative analysis of the 3-D structures
of proteins, DNA and there complexes. Significant work has been done
all ready and can be reviewed at the URL http://cuhhca.hhmi.columbia.
edu/bourne.html. Applicants will have a MS in Computer Science or
at least 3 years of experience in a programming environment and
be well versed in good software design using C++ and Perl. Experience
with object oriented or relational databases, programming for massively
parallel computers, and a good knowledge of protein structure would be
considered an advantage.
The San Diego Supercomputer Center offers excellent facilities and is
located on the campus of the University of California at San Diego.
The initial appointment would be for one year.
