Protein Crystallographer SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, PA [March 15, 1995]

SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals has an immediate opening for a senior
scientist to join its protein crystallography group. Applicants should have a
Ph.D. with broad experience in protein crystallization, structure solution and
refinement. Experience in molecular biology, low temperature crystallography
or the use of synchrotron radiation sources is desirable. The successful
candidate will work in close collaboration with other scientists in a
structure-based approach to the design of biologically active pharmaceuticals.
Numerous protein targets are available for structure analysis. Our
laboratory is well equipped with rotating anode generators including an area
detector system equipped for low temperature crystal cooling. Computing and
molecular graphics facilities are excellent. For consideration please send a
resume including the names of three references to:
     Ward W. Smith Ph.D. or Sherin S. Abdel-Meguid Ph.D.

The macromolecular crystallography group of the Biology and Biotechnology
Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an immediate opening
for a Biomedical Scientist at the BS or MS level in the field of
macromolecular crystallography, with emphasis on crystallization and molecular
biology.
Rank and Salary are open.
This is a 2 year term position, extension possible.
Initial replys to and more info from : rupp1@llnl.gov
Livermore is located in a valley 40 mi south east of San Francisco and
operated by the University of California for the United States Department of
Energy. We operate a new X-ray user facility specializing in high resolution
cryo-crystallography of macromolecules. External collaborations are welcome.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:
The individual will participate in the crystallization of biological
macromolecules and the operation of a macromolecular X-ray crystallography
laboratory. She / he will work closely together with protein chemists and
staff crystallographers. Experience in the biochemistry of proteins and
crystallogenesis of biological macromolecules is essential. Familiarity with
modern crystallographic techniques and computing (including programming) are
of advantage.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
-modify crystallization experiments and produce data that meet specific
experimental goals defined by lead principal investigator
-maintain complete records of plans, procedures and results
-participate in analysis and setup of crystallization experiments with a
modest level of supervision
-prepare results for analysis by others
-perform basic duties of laboratory maintenance such as ordering supplies and
chemicals, stocking of materials with a minimum of supervision
MARGINAL DUTIES:
-assist in data collection and analysis of diffraction data
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
-BS or MS in biochemistry, chemistry, biology or relevant field of science
-previous experience in experimental protein chemistry and/or
crystallogenesis of biological macromolecules
-proven ability to work and communicate in collaborative environment
DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
-basic computer skills in Microsoft Windows / SGI Irix environment
SECURITY : Ability to obtain *P* clearance

Experienced Scientific Programmer, EMBL, Germany [March 8, 1995]

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg is
searching for an experienced scientific programmer to work as a program
advisor and trainer ofr the use of several parallel machines in molecular
biology applications. The machines include a MasPar, a sixteen processor SGI
Power Challenge and a AXP workstation farm coupled by a Gigaswitch. A
scientific programming background with experience in developing or porting
code to parallel architectures using shared memory or message passing is
essential. The successful candidate will act as an advisor to users who are
attempting to port molecular biology codes to parallel machines and will
organize short training courses in parallelization. Fluency in English is
essential. Experience in molecular biology, protein crystallography image
processing or molecular dynamics would be an advantage but not essential.
This position will be supported for two years by an EU grant however
candidates need not be residents of EU countries. Details can be obtained
