Virtual BubblesVisualizations of high-resolution direct numerical simulations by Gretar Tryggvason and his group at Worcester Polytechnic Institute run on SDSC's DataStar supercomputer show deformable bubbles in a turbulent upward channel flow. While it is well known that nearly spherical bubbles accumulate near the walls, the DOE-supported research shows that deformable bubbles accumulate in the center of the channel, giving new insights into these important engineering flows that are difficult to study through experiments alone.
