New Insights into RNA ProcessingAn organism's transmission of genetic information from DNA through RNA to produce proteins involves several types of RNA metabolism, and many of the required molecular machines are built around a core of "Sm" proteins. A collaboration involving scientists at the University of Paris and researcher Cameron Mura in the McCammon group at UCSD has recently discovered that these proteins, which are associated with autoimmune diseases such as lupus, self-assemble into fibers, shown in axial view. Structural investigations of these fibers include refinement of enormous 3-D models using SDSC supercomputers and data archiving. Credit: C. Mura, UCSD, CTBP.
