Earthquake Simulation for Puente Hills FaultA detailed simulation by SCEC scientists visualized with SDSC's Scalable Visualization Toolkit and Alias Maya on the TeraGrid at SDSC shows a horizontal component of the ground velocity in a possible magnitude 7.2 earthquake on the Los Angeles-area Puente Hills fault, discovered in 1999. The simulation models potential ground motions and damage from such earthquakes, which have damage estimates in excess of $250 billion. Simulations by R. Graves, URS Corp.; SCEC, and USGS; visualization by A. Chourasia and S. Cutchin, SDSC/UCSD. Source: San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego |
