The Wireless Watershed: Monitoring and Modeling Southern California Watersheds

This paper briefly describes a new interdisciplinary research program that is a joint effort between researchers at the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. We have defined and are building two key capabilities to aid in improving the coastal water quality in San Diego County and provide quick-response information to assist in early-warning of human health risks: 1) a real-time and near real-time precipitation, water quantity and quality monitoring network supporting the identification of source and impacts of stormwater runoff. 2) data acquisition, dissemination, and modeling system to provide this information to the organizations and individuals with the responsibility for managing and responding to water quality impairments and risks. These functions can provide early benefits to water quality managers while supporting a longer-term strategy of integrated watershed management. Our efforts have started in the Santa Margarita watershed and include an assessment of the suitability for applying the developing approach to other watersheds including especially the San Diego and Tijuana River watersheds. We are also examining the use of these results in developing effective approaches to TMDL-based watershed regulation and management.
