Protein Kinase Databases

Genomic and post-genomic technology has revolutionized our ability to collect detailed molecular information about living systems. Protein kinases, because of their multifarious roles in the regulation of growth and development, response to the environment, and importance in human disease, represent an extremely target for molecular information. We are currently developing two databases that focus on protein kinases and their functions. The first, PlantsT (http://plantsp.sdsc.edu) focuses on protein kinases and protein phosphatases in plants. The second, PKR – the protein kinase resource (http://pkr.sdsc.edu), focuses on protein prohosphorylation across all species. These resources are integrative – they bring together information on the genetics, sequence, and function of protein kinases into a single, vertically integrated, resource. They also provide a means of organizing the increasingly complex genome-wide experimental observations and ultimately to provide a framework for interpreting them.

The goals of both of these projects push the boundaries of scientific database technology. Important issues include: how to transform the information in databases so that they more closely resemble reviewed scientific literature, how to deal with rapidly accumulating data, how to integrate information from many types of experiments, and from many electronic resources. Solutions to these problems are critical as we move into systems biology and aim towards producing increasingly complex computational models of living systems.
