Abstract:
These are amazing times for biology. With a draft of the human genome
complete, attention is turning to the proteome, the complement of
proteins encoded by that genome. This focuses attention on the structure
of those proteins to better understand function, protein-protein,
and protein-ligand interactions. It is here that UCSD has a unique
resource, the Protein Data Bank (PDB) from which these studies are
possible. The PDB is the single worldwide repository for macromolecular
structure data and is operated by the Research Collaboratory for Structural
Bioinformatics (RCSB) consisting of Rutgers University, the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and UCSD.
The PDB has recently achieved two milestones. First the 15,000th structure
was released - estimates call for 35,000 structures in the next 4-5
years. Second, a paper describing the PDB^Òs capabilities under
the direction of the RCSB was the second most cited paper of 2000
according to ScienceWatch®. Our next milestone is to be sure that
the PDB is serving not just the global community but the local community
in the best way possible.
As a first step in this direction, please join us for an informal
brown bag lunchtime seminar to learn about existing and new features
of the PDB. At this meeting we will define further forums from which
we can help you gain the most from this unique resource. All the UCSD
PDB staff will be on hand and we look forward to meeting with you.
