Title:
Chasing Icebergs in Antarctica

Abstract:
In the austral summer of 2005, a group of scientists from UCSD, USD, Univ. of South Carolina and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute undertook an expedition funded by the National Science Foundation to study free-floating icebergs in the Weddell Sea. Expedition members included senior scientists as well as graduate and undergraduate students for the purpose of characterizing the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of icebergs and their impact on the water and life forms they affect. The talk will include some of the sights and sounds of Antarctica and life onboard a research vessel as this multi-disciplinary study was carried out, as well as a taste of the challenges of Antarctic Research.
