SIOExplorer: A Scalable Digital Library for Oceanographic Data
http://SIOExplorer.ucsd.edu

Over the past two years, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO),  San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and the UCSD Libraries have collaborated to create a modern, re-usable, Oceanography Digital Library that enable inquiry-driven learning for both scientists and "K through gray" users. Using materials from the SIO Library Archives and extensive scientific data sets from the SIO Geologic Data Center (GDC) as a starting point, the project applies SDSC-developed information technologies to provide universal access to oceanographic data from ship-based expeditions, archival materials from the history of oceanography and a catalogue of seamounts developed at IGPP, as well as historic documents for Scripps' voyages of discovery that bring the human side of oceanography to life.  The SIOExplorer system is accessed through a graphical, user-interface named CruiseViewer that provides a coherent method of browsing, querying and obtaining data and metadata directly from the digital library to the desktop.
