ICENI: an architecture for the development and deployment of high-performance applications

John Darlington is the Director of the London e-Science Center, one of the institutions set up as part of the UK's e-Science or Grid programme. A major component of their work is on software technologies for the construction and intelligent execution of large-scale scientific applications. This work has resulted in the ICENI (Imperial College e-Science Networked Infrastructure) system. This combines a component-based approach to application construction with a middleware built on Jini (but OGSA compliant) that allows the sharing of distributed resources and their exploitation by applications constructed from components. We emphasise the importance of meta-data, both of the application's requirements and the resource's capabilities, in informing an intelligent and flexible mapping. In this and earlier work they have very much mirrored the philosophy underlying the AppLeS projects and your current GRAIL project.
