*ELEMENT

Function

*ELEMENT is used to test for the presence of a specified element or set of elements.

Graphics QUEST3D Procedure

The equivalent test construction in Graphics QUEST3D is discussed under ELEMENTS.

Basic QUEST Procedure

Ex.1

T1 *ELEM Te

This will register hits for all entries containing tellurium.

Ex.2

T1 *ELEM 8Y

This will register hits for all entries containing elements of group 8Y, ie. Co,Rh,Ir.

Whereas Ex.1 illustrates a test for a single element, Ex.2 shows that tests can also be made on groups of elements.

The definition of group element symbols is given in Appendix 1 (bit screens 1-31) and below.

Ex.3

T1 *ELEM H & N & Os

This will register hits for entries containing C,H,N,Os

This is an inclusive test

ie. the test will succeed if other elements are also present.

Ex.4

T1 *ELEM H + N + Os

This will register hits for entries containing only C,H,N,Os

This is an exclusive test

ie. the test will fail if any other elements are also present.

Note that & and + must not be used together in the same test.

Related Bit Screens

Bit screens 1-31 (see Appendix 1) can be used to screen the presence of elements.

In Ex.2 above the test automatically sets query screen 9 to 1.

Thus an alternative instruction would be:

SCRE  9

Examination of bit screens 1-31 in Appendix 1 shows that group 4A does not include carbon.

Note also that bit screen 30 must be used if no distinction is to be made between H and D; otherwise bit screen 31 is used for H.
