*CODEN is used to test for entries having a specified journal coden (code number).
CSD Contents
For each CSD entry the journal reference is identified by 4 search fields
Biochim.Biophys.Acta has coden 113
J.Chem.Soc.,Perkin Trans.1 has coden 207
J.Chem.Soc.,Perkin Trans.2 has coden 188
Codens are used to avoid inconsistencies in the spelling and abbreviation of journal names; also to save space in the database.
Some users may be familiar with the International Coden system where, for example, Biochim.Biophys.Acta has international coden BBACAQ.
Appendixes 3, 4 and 5 list journal names, CCDC codens and international codens.
These are comprehensive only at the time of writing this User Manual. To obtain the codens for new journals which will appear in later updates of the database you must use the HELP system.

Select *CODEN from the NUMERIC sub-menu and respond to the standard numeric prompts.
Basic QUEST Procedure
Normally a literature search will involve tests using several of the related keywords.
Ex. Find all entries published in 1989 in the journal Heterocycles which has coden 392.
T1 *CODE .EQ. 392 T2 *YEAR .EQ. 1989 QUES T1 .AND. T2
Remarks
Care must be taken in situations where a journal splits into several parts or undergoes various name changes. Some of the more important examples of these problems are listed below:
