Function

CHAIN is used as a short-cut in generating a chain of atoms having a specified length.

The chain is constructed using the current element and bond types.

Example

Suppose the current element type is C and the current bond type is SING.

Select CHAIN

How many atoms required in the CHAIN ?
(If you don't want a chain of atoms, enter 0)

Type 5 <R>
The drawing area now contains (i) - see below.
Select CHAIN

How many atoms required in the CHAIN ?
(If you don't want a chain of atoms, enter 0)

Type 3 <R>

Please select the atom to which CHAIN will be added
(Select CANCEL if you don't want a CHAIN.)

Select atom a
The drawing area now contains (ii)
Select CHAIN

How many atoms required in the CHAIN ?
(If you don't want a chain of atoms, enter 0)

Type 4 <R>

Please select the atom to which CHAIN will be added
(Select CANCEL if you don't want a CHAIN.)

Select position b
The drawing area now contains (iii).

The above sequence of operations demonstrates that when a fragment exists in the drawing area then selection of CHAIN allows you to connect the new chain to the existing fragment at a branch point or to start a completely new chain, not connected to the existing fragment.

If the drawing area is completely blank then selection of CHAIN automatically creates the chain in the centre of the drawing area - as in (i).
