Responsibilities:
We are seeking a highly collaborative and mechanically adept individual to join the Genentech protein crystallography group, consisting of approximately 20 scientists, research associates and postdoctoral fellows engaged in structure determination of proteins and protein-ligand complexes of therapeutic interest. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for maintaining and improving our in-house X-ray crystallography facility, which currently consists of X-ray generators and detectors, automated crystal imaging systems and robotic crystallization equipment. The individual will be the primary contact for vendor-assisted troubleshooting and will perform daily and preventative maintenance. The individual will have the opportunity to collaborate on diverse projects by assisting with in-house data collection.
Requirements:

Honeywell’s Resins and Chemicals business within the Specialty Materials division offers a robust product portfolio and manufacturing capabilities to a wide variety of customers worldwide. Products include the nylon feedstock caprolactam and other chemicals, ammonium sulfate fertilizers and specialty polymers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Propose and develop new concepts for caprolactam, ammonium sulfate and related compound crystallization.
- Lead product and process development efforts including pilot programs.
- Design and build laboratory scale apparatus and supervise experimental operations.
- Supervise technicians, maintain laboratory facilities and implement new equipment and procedures.
- Support existing fertilizer manufacturing and customer applications world-wide.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- MS/PhD. in chemical engineering with experience in crystallization and precipitation processes.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong understanding for developing process engineering scopes for new processes a plus.
- Requires experience with experimental design and statistical analysis.
- Experience with industrial solution crystallization a big plus.
- Background in product development a plus.
- Six Sigma training a plus.
- Ability to plan and lead projects essential.
- Modeling experience a plus
- Familiarity with methods development a plus.
- Experience using Excel, MSWord and PowerPoint.
- Programming experience in Basic or FORTRAN a plus.
- Experience building small scale reactors in glassware and/or in metal.
- Experience with basic statistics.
- Background in basic analytical chemistry a plus.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Bias for action and results oriented mindset.
- Technical competence: statistical, analytical, mechanical, chemical and computer skills
- Ability to work both independently, and in team environments.

Research Associate-Protein Engineering
We have an opportunity for a talented research associate to join the protein structure group involved in exploring structure and functional properties of proteins of therapeutic interest. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for purification, characterization, and crystallization of proteins for structural determination. The work includes developing and optimizing protein purification strategies, crystallizing proteins in the presence or absence of ligands, while contributing both to small molecule discovery programs and basic research projects.
Requirements: BS or MS in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related discipline. Prefer three or more years of technical experience in areas related to protein chemistry, along with experience in a structural biology group highly. Must be motivated and capable of working independently, in addition to enjoying working in a collaborative setting. Strong analytical, communication and organization skills are also required.
